Should a new investor invest in every mutual fund category?

If you have any mutual fund queries, message on ET Mutual Funds on Facebook. We will get it answered by our panel of experts.

I am 35 years old. I want to invest Rs 14,000 through SIPs for the long term. Please suggest funds in all categories: mid, large, small cap and diversified.

It seems, you are new to investing inmutual funds. If so, you must consult a reliable mutual fund advisor near you before investing. Please ask your friends and colleagues in the vicinity for reference.

We always ask investors to choose their mutual funds based on their goals, investment horizon, and risk profile. Since you are investing for the long term, you may consider investing in equity mutual fund schemes. However, the category would depend on your risk profile. For example, if you are conservative equity mutual fund investor, you should invest mostly in large cap mutual fund schemes. A moderate investor may consider investing mostly in multi cap mutual fund schemes. Aggressive investor can choose mid cap or small cap schemes based on their risk appetite.

Investing across every category do not ensure diversification. Diversification is about spreading your investments among best possible options to reduce risk and maximizereturns.

Planning to invest in mutual funds to build a retirement corpus? Here is what you should know.

Invest in zero commissions direct mutual funds with ETMONEY. Start SIP as low as ₹500/month.
